Deadlines

We all have to live with deadlines, either they may be personal or business one’s.

The funny things with deadlines are that we all know we have them, we often set them up by ourselves and yet they have the force to really stress one up til madness. The most common deadline to be broken is the one you set for yourself. And the more shallow the reason the sooner and easier it is for us to break them, and no harm done, don’t get me wrong. But what this post is truly about are the deadlines that actually cause stress and problems for others that should be eliminated or at least minimized.

The thing with business deadlines are that they certainly affects others, either you want or not. So how could deadline respect be lifted from the gutter it has ended in lately?

deadline2The one to crack this will most probably be very successful and rich, and further more well liked in he’s/her’s work community. One of the problems these days are that the deadlines are strained to the limit and they push people to the edge. Time is money and therefore deadlines are set in my opinion too close for the end result to be satisfactory for everybody. When the project time is set to be too short it as good as always means that some corners are drawn straight which means the faults may be hidden as the end result is presented, but sooner or later they will be revealed.

The case the triggered this post for me today was a project i have been working on long days and even on weekends, just so that i would reach the customer set result by a deadline that was known to be idiotic. Well as a worker i have high expectations  on myself and the result i present. So this time i worked hard and including bending the rules to achieve the customer set goal. And so came the day today when the deadline was reached at 11:45am. I presented the result earlier during the morning and i transferred it to the production environment as agreed. 11:48am the customer sent me an email telling me not to move it to the production environment and that we would check the situation again next noonday. Meaning that they moved the deadline by them self, without a apology, or even a reason on why the wanted did this.

Cases like this really angers me and as soon as i heard the news my interest and urge to please the customer dropped like a stone. Why doesn’t the customer respect their own deadlines. I would like to know what kind of problems this resulted at their own end as the end-users should have had a seminar from 12am to 5pm where this was to be presented. Now as the order not to go live with was told to me there was nothing to present to the end users. deadline

Well, at the end the problem is not mine. When the command to go live reaches me i just have to do one simple thing and everything is set. As i did reach the goals for what the project was set for, there wont be any changes made anymore. So, when to go command comes i just launch the result and the customer will have to explain themselves to their bosses.

But it’s still very annoying and sad that these things happens over and over again all over the business world. 😦

 

New work week.

So it’s Monday again and a new business week has started. Nice!

This week is going to be a normal 5 day week. Because of Easter holidays and other reasons I’ve had shorter weeks for the past 3 weeks. That has resulted in more stress, longer days at the office and undone tasks. As the weeks are now normal i hope to get some undone things moved to the done pile and also get started on new. But the best part is that i’m on a good mood all thou it’s Monday. I wrote in Swedish a little while back about the issue of being tired at your work and just cursing about it instead of making a change, and as a shorter version of that blog post i just have to say here that i cant understand people who just won’t do anything to fix the problem.

If you ain’t happy about the situation you just shouldn’t complain and make everybody around you unhappy and irritated with your unsatisfied situation. You should try to remind yourself that negative thoughts affects others twice as fast as happy and has almost twice of the effect. And  a good thing to also remember is that happy people are always nicer to be around then grumpy and whining counterparts.

The weekend went fast, and not everything is going as smooth as we would have hoped with my better half, or should i say with our daughter. We suspect that the sweet potato she has been eating for little under a week has cause her stomach ache. She has been very at uneasy and also seems to have had pain. It escalated to the point yesterday that we had to give her a painkiller to calm her down. Surely, a moment after we gave it to her she calm down a lot and at the time of 9:15 pm she fell asleep.

We now agreed at home that we should change her diet to something else and decided on cauliflower. Hopefully that wont case her so much unease and she will return to the happy little girl she is. 🙂

Other things this week that’s pretty fun is the semifinals in the ladies league in handball here in Finland, and also the starting of men’s quarterfinals. On the ladies side there’s one semifinal left and thats played to day where Dicken from Helsinki meets GrIFK from Kauniainen. As the situation is 2-2 in matches the match today will decide who of the two goes to the finals against HIFK. The looser from this game will go to bronze match against BK-46 from Karjaa. On the men’s side the quarterfinals starts this week and that’s always fun to follow. Mostly because my old team has gone threw and will meet BK-46. The same club they have gone up against the last 4 years. Earlier years Atlas has won but this year i think the matches will be much more even. And i wouldn’t be surprised if all 5 matches are needed to decide who will go onward to the semifinals.

Jääkiekkoa, ny månad and a good work week.

Tänään tuli sitten se odotettu päätös SM-liigan kurinpitoryhmälle, ja mielenkiintoista tietoa sieltä sitten tulikin. Aikasemmin viikolla saimme tietää että Summanen sai rangaistuksen 5 ottelua toimitsijakieltoa sekä HIFK seurana sai vielä 10 000,- sakkoa. Tämä vaikutti minulle jo silloin aika kovalta tuomiolta, joka sai pelolla odottamaan Nordlundin tuomiota. Odotin että nyt tulee kovia tuomioita jolla yritetään pelottaa niin pelaajat, toimitsijat kuin seuratkin takaisin ruotuun.

No mikä oli sitten Jokerit pelaaja Nordlundin tuomio, se oli niinkin laimea kuin 2 ottelun pelikielto, eikä siinä vielä pahin, vaan tuomio tuli “kohtuuttoman kova peli” nimikkeellä…siis MITÄ?

Eli taklaus oli kurinpitoryhmän mukaan puhdas, mutta SM-liigan johto oli sitä mieltä että annetaan nyt kuitenkin kaverille jotain koska kaikki huutaa niin kovaa, myös sponsorit. Ei kuulkaa, eihän se näin voi mennä. Vaikka Jokerit fani olen niin eihän tuossa nyt ole päätä eikä häntää. Tuomioiden julkistamisen jälkeen niin myrsky on ollut valtaisa, ja uutisia tulee asiassa enemmän kuin mikään webmasteri on aikoinaan osannut odottaa.

Se joka tilanteessa on hieman huvittavaa on se että nyt kun tuomiot on annettu, niin eikö se yleensä ole niin että joku on edes hiljaa ja tyytyväinen tilanteessa?

Tällä kertaa näin ei ole, Jokerit valittaa koska heidän mielestä tämä kahden ottelun kielto on symboolisesti täysin täyttä paskaa, HIFK huutaa koska tuomiot eivät ole suhteutettuna millään tasolla reiluja, yleisö ja katsojat huuttaa, riippuen nyt leiristä, pelaajat valittaa ja media ei ole tyytyväinen. Kysymys kuuluukin, miten tilanne pitäisi korjata? Jos liitto menee nyt muuttamaan tuomioita näyttävät että he eivät pysty tekemään päätöstä ja pitämään siitä itse kiinni, vaan myötäilevät vielä enemmän sitä mitä muut sanovat. Jos sen sijaan pitävät kiinni päätöksestä he näyttävät että jo alkuunkin ottavat ohjailuja media/henkilösuhde/sponsori tai yhteistyö kumppaneilta/ tai muualta, eikä sääntökirjaa tulkitsien.

En missään nimessä väitä tietäväni tähän ratkaisua, mutta sen sanon että mielenkiinnolla odotan lopputulemaan, koska en usko hetkeäkään että tämä tähän loppui. 🙂

En ny månad

Det är fredag, och även första dagen av en ny månad. Tänk, vi är redan inne i Mars. Skoj tycker jag för det betyder att vi går vidare mot sommaren, vilket betyder att det snart börjar betyda sommarställe tider. Väntar med iver att få åka ut till holmen. Men det att en ny månad betyder också att det är dags att kolla in lite statistik hur det går med skrivande. för att nu påminna lite om hur det var efter Januari så läs följande:

Februari har börjat och dags för första koll, att har det blivit till ngt av bloggande. Fast “historiken” är bara en månad så kan man säga att den kanske inte nådde riktigt så högt som jag tänkt mig vad gäller post aktivitet. I januari blev det totalt 11 posts, delvis kanske de blev längre post än jag tänkte mig. men hade nog önskat att nå en 50% skriv antal aktivitet. Menande då att januari har 31 dagar så minst 15 bloggningar. :/

Så hur ser det ut nu då?

Det blev 11 poster i februari. 28 dagar i månaden, vilket betyder att det borde blivit 14st poster. Med kort matematik kan vi fast ställa att inte heller i Februari klarade jag av mitt mål på 50%. Det blev fast på så lite som 3st poster. Så nära, men aj så långt ifrån ändå. 🙂

Men nu skall jag nog försöka förbättra mig med skrivandet och som motivator kan jag nämna att jag aktiverat mig starkt på Twitter för att lära mig skriva korta snabba inlägg. Samtidigt har jag även märkt att jag blivit lite taggad av Twitter och hittar mig mera och mera följa med vad som händer där, kanske lite mera än på Facebook som jag tidigare använt klart mest. Måste ändå medge att vad kommer Twitter är jag en riktigt enormt stor nybörjare där. Finns så mycke jag inte förstår eller kan utnyttja, men det blir bättre.

Men nu då Mars, försöker febrilt komma på vad som skulle vara så speciellt med Mars men det står tyvärr lite still. Kanske jag kommer på det senare och då skriver jag in det här.

A good work week

This week has been a hectic and intresting. The start of the week was so filled with tasks and meetings that i really didnt have much time to think that much, just needed to perform. The good side was by my oppinion that i did perform and alot was solved, created and investigated in. That made it possible to participate in a Sharepoint 2013 course that was arranged at the office, and wich i got in to. The course and education was partly meant for me as i’m the back-up for the knowledge management manager at our company, and i do help him in the day to day tasks, alltho not that much at the moment as i have so much of my own work.

The teacher in this course was Jussi Roine, a Sharepoint certified Master with the ability to answer any question thrown at him without hesitation. Like i told my fiancé at home after the first day i could the you the same.

I know i’m above a normal Sharepoint user in my knowledge about Sharepoint, but at times as i experienced during the course i felt tiny as a mouse with my so called “knowledge” what comes to SP. What i liked very much in Jussi was his ability to either talk in hardcore code language, OR in user friendly language. He could explain everything in atleast 3 sorts of ways, wich was the key that everyone at the place understood the things we went thru. The fun part was that there was nobody on our company that participated in this was near the expert level that Jussi posessed. And here i have been thinking that the members in our Microsoft team has been of the finest in Finland.

I’m not saying they are’nt, but the things and specially the knowledge Jussi posessed was impressing.

But to go into the product we were studying about, Sharepoint 2013 i must acknoledge that it truly is a versatile and large allround solution for document handling, intranet and extranet and so much more. I’ve seen Sharepoint as a type of a dinosaur of filesharing before, it has never been really specially good. Medium and maybe even a little more, but somehow i have had the feeling that “there has to be something better”. I’m not saying that there wouldnt be, either in pure filesharing and storing, or in intranet solutions. But the way Sharepoint 2013 moulds everything into one, that is impressing.

Allso the way Microsoft has melted everything together, and added new solutions on-top or besides the original tasks, that is suprisingly good. Like the social connector.

After the education i still had to do some of the workload that had piled on during theese two days for learning and it was’nt that bad. Actually it was nice to sit at the office with my manager and just work a while. As there was just the two of us, and no imidiate stress we could throw ideas and oppinions to eachother and i actually enjoyed working with him. We came to discuss things we normally doent do in during the office hours and he enabled me in a way i really didnt think he could.

I should try to get this kind of situations more often, that way i would learn about him and hopefully he about me. Because it’s noteworthy that we only worked for 2 months now together.
